Have copyright questions? The library has answers.

From books to business cases, photocopies to fair use, we’ve got you covered.

copyright-questionsThe library has recently added to its website important information about copyright and how it relates to the Bentley community. Within the Research tab in the top navigational bar of our website, you will find the “Policy on the Use of Copyrighted Materials for Education and Research”. This updated policy is designed to address the ambiguities of copyright law in relation to evolving faculty needs and student expectations and provides useful information to assist in interpreting the law and applying its principles to the use of copyrighted material in teaching and scholarship.

In addition, the library offers a comprehensive research guide to assist the Bentley University community in matters of copyright that are most likely to be encountered in academic setting. This guide is informed by numerous resources on copyright law and its relation to higher education and is shaped by the “community of practice” that has emerged among scholars and librarians.

Schedule a Research Consultation with a Bentley Librarian!

Reference Librarians are, first and foremost, researchers, and the Bentley Librarians have a particular expertise with the content, collections and scope of the resources available at Bentley University.

We are here to help you achieve the goal of an excellent paper or project.

We assist with:

  • Planning a research strategy.
  • Database selection & searching.
  • Locating specific materials.

Many of these activities can be done directly with a librarian at the Reference Desk, but booking an appointment can help save you time and will help you get the most out of the resources available to you.

Assistance is available for all skill levels and interests! Examples of these might include:

  • First year student working on a pro/con paper.
  • Upperclassman working on an honors capstone thesis.
  • Student researching a company in preparation for a job interview.
  • Graduate student team working on a strategic marketing plan.
  • PhD student working on a dissertation.
  • Professor working on her/his own research or curricular design.
  • And many more…

Click here to schedule a one-on-one research consultation with a Bentley Reference Librarian! Consultations last about 30 minutes to an hour depending on the needs of the user and take place during normal Reference Librarian hours. Consultations need to be booked with at least 24 hours advanced notice for users to make the most of these sessions.

For more immediate assistance, help is also available at the Reference Desk.

Try Our New Ask Us Service.

askus

One of our tasks this summer was to build a database of frequently asked questions and answers. The result is a new service that we are calling Ask Us.

Knowing that others have asked the same question is a comfort, but more than that, seeing questions you might not have intended to ask but wanted to know can help you to learn new things.

Here are a few examples:

Access is available in a number of ways:

If you have a question that is not answered, you can submit your question and your email address to get an answer. If the question is asked a few times, we’ll add it to the knowledge base. Of course, you can still visit our reference librarians in person at the library and we encourage you to do so, but try this service out. Give it a spin and see what questions others are asking and what the answers are.

5 New Things at the Library

Welcome back from spring break! As you settle back into the routine of classes, campus activities and studying, we would like to draw your attention to five new technology, equipment and website additions at the library. We want to make your library experiences – from charging your smartphone to identifying the location of a book in the stacks – a little bit easier.

Many of these items were implemented in response to feedback received during 14 Days to Have Your Say!, but we welcome suggestions at any time. Email library@bentley.edu or use the Contact Us form to tell us how we can improve the library.

1. USB charging outlets have been installed in the atrium outside the art gallery.

2. StackMap has been integrated with Encore (classic catalog integration is coming soon). Click the “Map It!” button to pinpoint the exact physical location of books, DVDs, audiobooks and periodicals in the library.

Learn to Use RefWorks in 20 Minutes

Want to learn how to use Refworks? These video clips are available to help.

RefWorks is a tool that creates bibliographies and formats research papers in the citation style of your choice (e.g. APA, MLA). Learn to export citations, create bibliographies, and save and organize sources for all your research papers and projects – all in one place.

If you decide you’d like to use Refworks, just visit RefWorks and look for the link to “Sign up for a New Account”. It is important to use your Bentley University e-mail address when creating this account. This works best when you are on campus. Contact the Reference Desk if you need help creating an account from Off Campus.

Library Printing Update

The most frequently asked questions at the library this week have been “how do I print?” (from new students) and “are these printers working?” (from returning students). Just before fall classes started, Bentley’s IT Client Services made an important change to the campus printing network, affecting library computer use and printing. Users who wish to print from a library computer are now required to login to the computer using their full Bentley email address and network password. To release a print job, users must swipe their Bentley ID at the printer.

Details about the network printing changes were provided in an email sent by the Help Desk to all students on Tuesday, September 2nd (copied below):

Dear Students,

Welcome back to Bentley.

Over the summer there has been a change to the network printing stations located in the Library and the Student Center. The keyboards have been removed and you will now swipe your ID only to view and print your jobs.

The network printing queues are named “Falcon” (black and white) and “Falcon Color”. As a reminder, print jobs remain in the queue for 48 hours only. After that time, they are deleted.

If you plan to print from the Library computers, you will need to login to the Library computer using your full Bentley email address and your network password. The username, “.\classuser”, is no longer a valid login to the Library computers.

As a recap, printing from the network printers in the Library and the Student Center will now be done by swiping your ID card.

When using a Library computer, you will need to use your network credentials (Bentley e-mail and password) to login and use the computers. The username “.\classuser” is no longer available.

Please contact the HelpDesk at the contact information below if you have any questions.

Best wishes for a successful semester.
