This month we feature Project MUSE as our Database of the Month:

Project MUSE provides scholarly journal and book content in the humanities and social sciences. Students, faculty, and staff conducting research in political science, literature, history, education, religion, cultural studies, gender studies, philosophy, science, mathematics, and more will find that Project MUSE can provide valuable content. Over 120 publishers provide content in Project MUSE including university presses and scholarly societies.

Users have the opportunity to browse by subject area, search in the full text content, or search by author, title, or publisher. Additional limiters can help users filter results further by content types, research areas, languages, and publication dates.

Search Tip: Project MUSE provides clear indictors in the results list that will let you know the access level of a particular listing. However, you can select to only search the content that Bentley University has full access to within Project MUSE.

Project MUSE Results List Example

Citation management options include emailing individual links or using Project MUSE’s suggested citations which provides examples in MLA, APA, Chicago, and Endnote formats. There is also the option to save citations to a folder during a search session. Citations in the folder can be exported to RefWorks or EndNote citation managers, saved as a .txt file, printed, or emailed. If you use the folder option, please note that it will expire once your search session ends or you close your browser.

Database of the Month: Opposing Viewpoints in Context

Opposing Viewpoints in Context covers social and political issues with access to primary and secondary source material including journal articles, national and global news sources, pro/con viewpoint essays, videos, podcasts, and more. It also includes full-text access to the Opposing Viewpoints book series.

This interdisciplinary database supports science, social studies, current events, and language arts classes, making it an ideal resource for research across the curriculum. Informed, differing views help learners develop critical-thinking skills as they examine topics from all perspectives to draw their own conclusions.

Periodical content covers current events, news and commentary, economics, environmental issues, political science, and more. Specific titles include The New York Times, Newsweek, Foreign Policy, American Scientist, and Education Week.

Opposing Viewpoints in Context is an ideal resource for debaters and researchers alike. It offers a breadth of information on over 400 topics from a variety of sources:

 

With fresh topics frequently added and a category on current national debate topics, this database provides quick and easy access to content on commonly studied and discussed issues.

Database of the Month: IBISWorld Industry Research

The IBISWorld Industry Research database has been a vital resource here at the Bentley Library for several years. For those of you who may not be familiar, here’s what you need to know about IBISWorld:

Report Types:

  • IBISWorld provides U.S. Industry Reports for 700+ industries.
  • Users can also find hundreds of U.S. Specialized Industry Reports for niche and emerging markets. Examples of specialized reports include Car Sharing Providers, Craft Beer Production, and Fantasy Sports Services.
  • The database includes access to 75 Global Industry Reports, which focus on industry performance in key regions like Europe, Asia, the Middle East and more.
  • Supplementary Brexit Impact Statements are available for all U.K. industries. These updates provide a briefing on the rapidly changing U.K. economy and the short-term threats, opportunities, and developments affecting each industry.

Report Contents:

  • Each industry report is approximately 30-40 pages in length and is updated regularly (up to 3 times per year), ensuring that they reflect the current state of an industry.
  • Reports contain trends, statistics, and analysis on industry performance, products and markets, the competitive landscape, major competitors in the industry, and operating conditions.
  • Each report examines details such as supply chain linkages, demand determinants, cost structure benchmarks, basis of competition, barriers to entry, capital intensity, revenue volatility, and regulations and policies.
  • Key statistics include industry data and financial ratios.
  • 5-year forecasts for each industry.
Each IBISWorld industry report includes 9 chapters, and 34 sub-chapters of industry insights, analysis, and data.

Database of the Month: World History & U. S. History in Context

A very popular question at the Reference Desk is “Where can I find primary sources?”

Today we want to highlight two full text databases, World History in Context & U. S. History in Context, which help find and provide primary sources.database logos

  • World History In Context – reaches back to the ancient world to provide a chronicle of cultures and societies that have shaped history. Content includes articles, videos, charts, images, infographics and primary sources. Sources are organized into different topic areas such as: Biographies – Countries, Cultures, and Civilizations – Economics – Events, Periods, and Cultural Trends – Political Constructs, Movements and Organizations – Religions – Wars and Conflicts.
  • U.S. History In Context – covers the most-significant people, events, and topics in U.S. history. Content includes major reference works, millions of news and periodical articles, and most significantly, more than 5,000 rare and vital primary source documents (from slave journals to presidential papers). Sources are organized into different topic areas such as: African American Perspectives – American Colonies – Biographies – Court Cases and the Supreme Court – Economics – Events, Decades, and Cultural Trends – Government Documents – Hispanic Americans – National History Day Topic – Native Americans – Political Constructs, Movements, and Organizations – Wars and Conflicts.

You can cross-search both collections using the Advanced search. After going into either of the databases, click on Advanced to the right of the search box to bring up the advanced search interface, then choose the “Both U. S. & World History” radio button.

Before clicking on the orange Search button, you can also limit to content type (i.e. primary sources) to focus your results even further.

Oxford Art Online is a comprehensive art research database comprising encyclopedias, dictionaries, images, and articles written by art history and research experts. The database contains more than 1,500 thumbnail art images, with links to searchable image databases and art images on museum and gallery web sites around the world.

Users can find information about:

  • Art forms
  • Creators and biographical information
  • Geographical regions
  • Styles and art movements
  • Time periods

Browsing

Users may view a full alphabetical listing of all available articles and images by choosing All Content from the browse bar at the top of the home page. Select Biographies, Subject Entries, or Images to browse specific types of content.

Searching 

A basic search box for keyword searching is provided at the top of the page. Users can also take advantage of the database’s Advanced Search capabilities, including specifying category searches such as time period, art style or geography. Advanced Search indexes for images, biographies, and bibliographies enable users to narrow searches to particular types of materials.

Users can also refer to Subject Guides that compile available database content for specific topics. Selected topics are shown below.

Search results can be printed and/or emailed for later use. In addition, the database provides copy-and-paste citations in MLA and Chicago formats, and citation export to RefWorks or other bibliographic management software.

S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage: New Name, Content, and Interface!

Introducing the new and improved NetAdvantage database!

The Standard and Poor’s NetAdvantage database has a new name, more content, and a refreshed interface. Now called S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage, the database presents with a dashboard view that may be familiar to regular users of the full version of the Capital IQ database offered at the Trading Room. But, please don’t confuse S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage with the full version of Capital IQ – they are two different resources!

S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage retains the same key S&P resources our users have come to rely on (e.g. industry surveys and stock reports), but brings new research content and tools.

Key features retained from the old NetAdvantage database:

  • Industry Surveys for more than 40 industries are still available, and we now have expanded access to international surveys for selected industries. The surveys continue to be published 2x per year and their format remains the same, but you will notice that they are now called CFRA Industry Surveys. Archived surveys are available back to 1999 unless a survey is a new title. There are two ways to retrieve an industry survey:
    • click the [Industry Surveys] button in the top menu, then choose from the list of industries
    • search for a company to retrieve the company profile, then click [Industry Surveys] in the left navigation bar to retrieve the relevant industry survey
  • Stock Reports also continue to be available, but are now found in the Equity Research section of a company profile. When viewing a company profile, click [Equity Research] in the left navigation bar, then select the CFRA Equity Research Report.

Key features added to the new NetAdvantage database:

  • expanded company universe of private and public companies (over 3 million)
  • new investment research from third party research providers (when viewing a company profile select “Investment Research”; also available under the “Investment Research” tab)
  • new industry data sets with benchmarks and key ratios (available under the “Markets” tab)
  • new drill-downs to sub-industry data, including key stats and ratios and financial operating metrics (available under the “Markets” tab > “refine industries”)
  • financial data items with new embedded audit trails to see how an item is derived
  • new chart builder tool
  • any screen can now be downloaded to Excel, Word, or as a PDF

Research example: Tesla

  • Start by using the search box to retrieve a company profile for Tesla. Note the navigation links on the left side of the screen to additional research, including equity research, investment research, industry surveys, financials, peer analysis, and news.

  • To retrieve Tesla’s stock report, click [Equity Research] in the left navigation bar, then select the Tesla, Inc. CFRA Equity Research Report.

  • To find additional analysis from brokerage firms click the link to the [Investment Research] section.

  • Research Tesla’s industry by clicking [Industry Survey]. Select the CFRA Industry Survey.

  • Build a chart for Tesla. Customize the time period/date range, choose metrics, and add annotations if desired (e.g. filings, announcements, distress indicators, etc.). The “Compare” feature enables you to compare additional entities against your primary entity. Watch this chart builder video tutorial for more information about using chart builder.

Database of the Month: Swank Digital Campus (Streaming Films)

This month we feature another of our streaming film collections as our Database of the Month. Swank Digital Campus includes over 100 feature films and documentaries from major studios spanning a number of genres. Films included in this database include cinema classics and contemporary films.

Swank Browsing Screen

This curated collection has popular titles such as Spotlight, Pulp Fiction, An Inconvenient Truth, and Fargo.  Recently released titles such as Moonlight, La La Land, and Fences are also available in Swank.

Browse films by genre on the homepage by scrolling through movie covers or search for titles directly in the search box. Click the film cover to begin viewing.

Swank Video Viewer

Each page for a film includes the film viewer (which can be expanded into full screen mode), release year, MPAA film rating, run time, brief synopsis, director, and actors.

Language audio and subtitle options vary by title. These can be found in the video viewer under the gear symbol [ Swank Gear Symbol ].

Direct links to films are available to share in course sites – the “Copy Direct Link” option will give you just the link where “Copy LMS Link” will give you the HTML code for the link to embed in a course site.

Access

Swank Digital Campus films can be streamed in your browser both on campus and off.

Database of the Month: Kanopy (Streaming Films)

With an ever-expanding catalog of over 50,000 films, Kanopy delivers diverse content in a variety of genres, from award-winning documentaries, training films, and theatrical releases on a wide range of topics and subject areas that span all academic disciplines. With media from producers such as Criterion Collection, PBS, Media Education Foundation, and Great Courses, this resource is ideal for both faculty and student research needs.

Access:

Streaming films from Kanopy can be viewed on or off campus through Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and IE and are accessed via authentication of your Bentley credentials and allows for simultaneous users of a particular title.

Search and Browse:

If there is a particular film you are looking for, you may search in the following ways:

From the library’s catalog:

Select Books/Video/Audio, enter your search criteria, then click Search.

Then click on the Kanopy link to view the film.

From Kanopy:

Enter your search criteria in the search box at the top of Kanopy’s main page and click the Search icon.

Then select the desired title from the listing of results.

The film should now appear ready to stream, complete with features described below.
