Diverse Voices Display: Culture Fest 2018 Event

Are you curious about the “world” of resources that the Library offers? Visit the Library lobby all week during Culture Fest to see a pop-up display of books and movies from across the globe!

Do you already have a favorite book or movie from a diverse voice or place that’s not in our collection? Let us know by placing a title into our suggestion box, and we’ll consider adding it. You can also give us your suggestions on Twitter and Instagram using the hashtag #BentleyLibraryWishlist.

While you’re browsing, visit our giant world map and pinpoint the location where you or your ancestors came from. And of course it’s not a Library event without buttons! We’ll have CultureFest buttons, national flag buttons, and more for you to add to your collection.

Chills & Thrills: Frightfully Good Books and Movies

It is the time to celebrate all things spooky.

The Bentley Library staff has put together a display of DVDs that are full of chills and thrills for your Halloween season. Check the DVD display shelves throughout the month of October. We hope you are bewitched by our picks!

In addition to DVDs, plenty of spooky content is available through our streaming film collections, Kanopy and Swank.  If you are interested in learning about horror as a medium, why not start with the master and stream a Talk from Hitchcock himself available through Films on Demand.

Other horror tales and ghost stories are available on our shelves and through Overdrive, including the classics, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and newer authors, Stephen King or Joe Hill. Don’t have time to commit to a whole novel? Why not check out a collection of short stories such as American Fantastic Tales or Flight or Fright!

These books were chosen from the stacks by our reference librarians to showcase titles that may have escaped your notice when they were originally added to the shelves. You will recognize some of these titles and authors from bestseller lists, while others were chosen based on recommendations from professional and scholarly review sources or are on topics currently in the news.

On Display: Books That Will Make You LOL

A soft chuckle.

A hearty laugh that erupts into a surprising snort.

Stifling a laugh because you are in public, causing your whole body to shake uncontrollably.

Laughing so hard you can hardly catch your breath. Laughing so hard you cry. Laughing so hard you wet your pants.

Whatever form it takes, we feel better after a laugh (well, unless you have soggy pants)! The goal of this book display is to lighten the mood. We want you to find a book that pushes the stress and frustration of the outside world away. A book that makes you feel good.

Recognizing that what’s funny to one is not funny to another, there’s a wide variety of humorous fiction and non-fiction titles included in this display. You’ll find lighthearted, silly, absurd, witty, surreal, satirical, sarcastic, observational, and dark comedy in these pages. No matter what your sense of humor, you should discover a book or an author that will make you LOL.

On Display: The Great American Read

Looking for a summer reading project? Join The Great American Read!

Join PBS and The Great American Read

PBS wants to know America’s favorite novel. Kicking off on May 22nd at 8 pm ET, The Great American Read hosted by Meredith Vieira will explore some of America’s most-loved novels over the course of eight episodes. Viewers can begin voting for their favorite from a list of 100 titles after the first episode airs. The series will return in the fall as the votes are tallied and the number one book is chosen.

Our lobby display pulls items from the Bentley Library’s collections on the Great American Read book list to make them available in one convenient spot for browsing. The novels selected span a variety of genres and time periods. Titles on the list include Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen, The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling, The Catcher in the Rye  by J.D. Salinger, Charlotte’s Web by E B White, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams, Beloved by Toni Morrison, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel García Márquez, and many more.

Reread one of your favorites or try something new! And, if you don’t have time to read the books we have a number of film adaptations available on DVD.

Participate with The Great American Read discussions on social media using the hashtag #GreatReadPBS and check out their website for fun activities such as a quiz to see how many of the 100 books you have read.

On Display: Fakes, Frauds & Phonies: Understanding the Noise in a Post-truth World

The phenomenon of “fake news” is nothing new. For centuries, consumers of information have encountered and engaged with sources that present stories that play to our own prejudices and biases, manipulating facts to serve specific agendas. Today, with the ubiquity and ease in which information is both disseminated and received, it is paramount that we remain vigilant against the scourge of fabricated sources.

As information professionals, librarians have been at the forefront of emerging media, providing guidance in using and interacting with information resources. Within the higher education community, academic librarians endeavor to ensure that learners know how to actively and responsibly engage with information as students, relying on ACRL’s Framework for Information Literacy in Higher Education. Librarians help students to recognize when information is needed and to develop the ability to locate, evaluate, and use effectively the needed information. These skills contribute to scholarly inquiry and help prepare for lifelong learning in the workplace and everyday life.

To further provide guidance in evaluating news sources, the Bentley Library has curated this collection of resources, which will be on display from April 3 to May 14.

On Display: Women’s History & Leadership

March is Women’s History Month and we are celebrating with a lobby display, guest curated by Bentley’s Center for Women and Business! Visit the library from 2/21/18– 4/2/18 to browse items in person, or see the list of display titles online. Many of these books, as well as additional women’s history and leadership titles, are available as eBooks and audiobooks via the library’s OverDrive digital collection.

This display encompasses many aspects of women’s history and empowering women’s advancement. Titles have been divided into two sections to help you browse and choose new books more easily.

  • Looking Back: Learn about inspiring, historical women and the ways that they have led and changed the world. Find out about the history of women’s suffrage, early female entrepreneurs, and more.
  • Looking Ahead: Get inspired to be a future leader by picking up titles that discuss current women’s issues and strategies for women at work. Titles in this section address the wage gap, leadership,  female mentorship, the state of women in politics, and more.

Check back on the display often – we will update the title list as new acquisitions arrive and checked-out titles return to the library.
