Frighteningly Good Reads

The Bentley Library staff created an online display that is full of chills and thrills. Including both downloadable audiobooks & ebooks, this selection helps you celebrate all things spooky.

In addition to the above collection, plenty of spooky content is available through our streaming film collections, Kanopy and Swank.  If you are interested in learning about horror as a medium, why not start with the master and stream a Talk from Hitchcock himself available through Films on Demand.

Other horror tales and ghost stories are available on our shelves, including the classics, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and newer authors, Stephen King, Octavia Butler, or Joe Hill. Don’t have time to commit to a whole novel? Why not check out a collection of short stories such as American Fantastic Tales or Flight or Fright!

Do you have a favorite pick you would like to recommend to fellow Bentley Horror Fans? Just drop us a line through Instagram or Twitter.

Happy Haunting.

Resource of the Month: Guide to Citing Sources Using APA Style (7th ed.)

If you have written a paper for a business, psychology, or sociology class here at Bentley, you’ve probably been required to cite your sources using APA Style. The Bentley Library’s Citing Online Business Resources Using APA Style guide has always been one of our most popular help guides, logging over 25,000 views annually!

New Edition of APA Style, New Library Help Guide!

In October of 2019 the American Psychological Association released the 7th edition of their official style guide, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, to reflect current best practices in scholarly writing and citation.

Over this past summer, reference librarians worked to update the library’s APA citation guide for the Fall 2020 trimester. The result is a completely revised APA Style help guide, featuring updated in-text citation guidance and new Reference list examples for over 50 different source types, including:

  • articles, books, and book chapters (print and electronic)
  • information retrieved from business databases and other specialized library resources (e.g. IBISWorld, Mintel, Mediamark, Statista)
  • websites, blogs, and social media
  • datasets
  • dissertations and theses
  • government reports, reports, and whitepapers
  • personal communications (emails, personal interviews, unrecorded lectures, etc).
  • PowerPoint slides and lecture notes
  • podcasts
  • webinars
  • focus groups (research participants)

Go to https://libguides.bentley.edu/citingsources-apa to bookmark the guide today! We guarantee you’ll return to the guide over and over again, especially when working on your GB course projects.

About APA Style, 7th edition

In addition to citation and reference format updates and clarifications, the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 7th edition also presents:

  • new bias-free language guidelines
  • 100+ new reference examples
  • 40+ new sample tables and figures
  • additional student-specific resources, including sample student papers
  • expanded guidance on ethical writing and publishing practices

For a chapter-by-chapter overview of what’s new, check out the APA’s What’s New in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Seventh Edition (7 pages, PDF). If you’d like to consult the full manual, you can find copies at the Reference Desk and in the Reference Stacks.

September's Arrivals: New Books, Audiobooks & DVDs

Check out the new titles we added to the library’s collection in September! To view the lists visit the New Books & DVDs page. Please note that the “ALL NEW BOOKS” link will display all new e-books and print books, but that due to differences in the way that e-books are cataloged they do not appear on the individual “Subject” lists.

Interested in borrowing a book, DVD or audiobook? If you are enrolled in Bentley’s COVID-19 screening program you are welcome to visit the library. Either stop by to browse, or place a hold request in the catalog and we’ll notify you when the items are ready to be picked up. You can then come in, retrieve your items from the “open holds cart” in the lobby, and check them out to yourself using the self-check. For those of you who are unable to come into the building, we have e-books, digital audiobooks, and streaming films for you to enjoy.

To learn more about our different e-book collections please see our recent Databases of the Month: eBook Collections post. Downloadable e-books and digital audiobooks are available via the OverDrive collection. For help using the OverDrive apps (either the original app or the new Libby app) please view their Getting Started page.

Lastly, you can find new films and documentaries to stream online for free from our four streaming films databases.

Database of the Month: PrivCo

PrivCo is an indispensable tool for company and industry research.  Its primary focus is on private, public, and foreign companies in specialized industries like On-Demand Services, e.g. Grubhub, DoorDash, or Transferwise.

What sets it apart from other company directories are the up-to-date funding and M&A histories, which are cross-listed with company and investor profiles directly on PrivCo.

company profile for GrubHub

The company overviews are concise and state the company’s business and all the industries it operates in.  Furthermore, the organization information is current and accurate.  For example, Takeaway.com BV, a Dutch online food delivery marketplace, bought Grubhub in June 2020.  Accordingly, PrivCo gives Takeaway.com BV as its parent.  In other company directories, Grubhub Inc. is still given as the parent.  Former names are given too, e.g. Grubhub Seamless, which aid in researching the company history on our other databases such as Nexis Uni.

Industry classifications do not capture the dynamism of companies operating across boundaries.  To that end, PrivCo traces connections between companies through its crowdsourced keywords describing the new demands and opportunities companies are pursuing.  In one snapshot, the keywords capture the diversity of a company like Amazon and link you to its competitors.

industry description and keywords for Amazon

Those same keywords can also be your starting point to find companies and investors on PrivCo.  In the Search feature, you can look up existing keywords for those entities.  The Search feature also allows you to select specialized industries, focus on specific geographic regions, and specify ranges for revenue, revenue growth, employees, employee growth, funding, and founding years.  You can also limit your search to companies backed by Private Equity or Venture Capital.

PrivCo search feature

Below the Search feature, A 100+ page Knowledge Bank lays out important industry terms and meanings for you to interpret content.  Above the Search feature, PrivCo’s Dashboard you can view updates for M&A deals, funding, and specialized industries.

PrivCo dashboard

Industry convergence defines business today, and PrivCo is the tool to learn about the companies making it happen.
