Bentley Library Top 10 Most Popular Books, DVDs & Audiobooks of 2016/17

Bentley Library Top 10Welcome to the 8th annual Bentley Library Top 10!

At the end of every academic year we query the library’s circulation system to rank the library’s most popular books, audiobooks, DVDs and OverDrive downloadable books based on the number of times they have been borrowed (excluding items placed on reserve for a class). Think of these as the library’s very own “bestseller” lists!

This year you’ll find a handful of titles that were popular across multiple formats. Small Great Things by Jodi Picoult,  Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance, Today Will be Different by Maria Semple, Commonwealth by Ann Patchett, and The Whistler by John Grisham all ranked on the book, eBook and digital audiobook lists.

John Brooks’s book Business Adventures was published back in 1969, but it just made its first appearance in our Top 10 two years after Bill Gates named it his favorite business book. And making a remarkable fifth appearance on the most circulated books list is Liar’s Poker by Michael Lewis! It’s a little unusual to not have any television series place in the Popular DVD rankings (not even Game of Thrones!), but what’s not surprising is that movies based on books scored big.

We hope you enjoy this glimpse into the reading and viewing habits of the Bentley community as much as we do, and that you’ll be inspired to borrow something that appears here. There were many ties in the rankings, so you have even more to choose from.

“Out in the Stacks”: Books & DVDs on Display for LGBT Pride Month

Many of you may already know that June is LGBT Pride Month! The month of June was chosen to commemorate the historic Stonewall Riots, which took place in NYC on June 28, 1969. Hundreds of Pride Parades & Marches will soon take place across the globe, including the Boston Pride Parade on June 10th. If you’re interested in marching with the Bentley PRIDE delegation, you can register online here, or contact coordinator Tony Martin at amartin@bentley.edu .

The library is celebrating Pride Month with a display of almost 170 titles related to the LGBTQIA+ community. We chose a mix of fiction (including many graphic novels!), non-fiction, movies, and documentaries to try to provide a wide variety of voices and perspectives. The titles in this display engage with gender and sexual identity in myriad ways – academic or personal, joyous or difficult, sometimes all at once.

Come browse the display in the library lobby – titles will rotate so please ask at the Reference Desk if you’d like to see all the books/movies that are currently available! You can also see the full list of titles in our online catalog. If you see an item you want to check out, hit the “Request It” button to place a hold. Keep an eye on our social media to get recommendations, and to find links to items you can read or watch online!

Resource of the Month: BrowZine

BrowZine is a free web and/or mobile application that allows users to browse, read, and follow academic journals from the Library’s collection. BrowZine allows users to read articles in a format that is optimized for their device. BrowZine is accessible via a Web browser and/or on Android, iOS, and Kindle Fire devices. You can also use this resource to find similar journals for ideas for new paper topics, to find places to publish or to just raise your awareness of what is being discussed in your field.

Users can:

  • Keyword search for journals (current and back issues) by subject, title, or ISSN, or browse via a subject list.
  • Curate their own collections using the My Bookshelf function to save journals for easy browsing
  • Use the My Articles function to save citations/articles for further investigation.

Expanded options for each citation include the ability to export citations to a citation manager such as Endnote or Refworks and the ability to share a link with a colleague or student.

Most of the titles available through BrowZine are available in full text through the current issue, but for a few titles, you may come across an embargo to online access indicated by an orange banner at the top of the journal’s issue.

For an embargoed title that the Bentley Library has in hardcopy, Faculty can use the Library’s Scan on Demand service to request a copy.

Book Dedications in Appreciation to Our Graduating Students

What would we do without our student assistants? They are here when we open the doors at 7:30 a.m. and close at 2:00 a.m. During exams we leave the overnight operation of the library in their trusted hands. We rely on them to help library users, wrestle with temperamental equipment, shelve and retrieve books (over and over and over again), facilitate Interlibrary Loan requests, and assist with the processing of every book and DVD we purchase. There’s so much more we could list, but suffice it to say that the library could not run without them.

It is a Bentley Library tradition to show appreciation to our graduates with a book or film dedication. Each student is invited to select an item that is meaningful to them, which is then affixed with a special bookplate in their name. This year, dedications have been made on behalf of these Class of 2017 graduates:

Adria Clanton-Thuon

Matt Glynn

Brandy Gwin

Analiz Henriquez

Janet Huang

Sully Jimenez

Sam Jung

Grace Litam

Kyla Reslock

Andrew Smith

A display of their selections will be available in the Popular Reading area. You can also view the photo album on Facebook and our Student Employee Dedications Pinterest board.

Congratulations and best wishes to our seniors, and thank you to all of our student employees for your hard work and commitment to the library.
