Chills & Thrills: Frightfully Good Books and Movies

It is the time to celebrate all things spooky.

The Bentley Library staff has put together a display of DVDs that are full of chills and thrills for your Halloween season. Check the DVD display shelves throughout the month of October. We hope you are bewitched by our picks!

In addition to DVDs, plenty of spooky content is available through our streaming film collections, Kanopy and Swank.  If you are interested in learning about horror as a medium, why not start with the master and stream a Talk from Hitchcock himself available through Films on Demand.

Other horror tales and ghost stories are available on our shelves and through Overdrive, including the classics, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein and Bram Stoker’s Dracula and newer authors, Stephen King or Joe Hill. Don’t have time to commit to a whole novel? Why not check out a collection of short stories such as American Fantastic Tales or Flight or Fright!

On View in the RSM Art Gallery: Photographs by Kyle Eyma

We are very pleased to announce that opening on October 5, 2018, is an installation of photographs by Bentley University student Kyle Eyma. All are invited to a reception to celebrate the artist and his work on Wednesday, October 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. The exhibit will be on view until November 5. Artist’s Statement

I know not everyone I shoot with prior to the photo, but afterwards, either via interaction or the camera, I learn a little bit about them. My photos feature different people, because I know a couple characters. The phrase ‘Damn, that kid’s black’, is just a statement of the obvious for saliency purposes. It’s an exclamation of the pride I have in myself. I’m unequivocally black. I’ve seen what I’ve seen and know what I know as a result. I bring it up because it’s entirely irrelevant but inarguably existential to my identity. Besides, I like standing out as the community of photographers of color is small. In this exhibition, I share my growing appreciation of the people I see. It explores color, light, darkness, and isolation in the city.

This exhibit is cosponsored by the Bentley Library, The Multicultural Center, The Valente Center for Arts & Sciences, Dean of Arts and Sciences, and the Global Studies Department.

We added 141 new books, DVDs, downloadable OverDrive books, and audiobooks to our collections in September. Go to the New Books & DVDs page to browse the new arrivals by subject or format. When you see something you want, click the “Request” button to place a hold on it.

National Voter Registration Day – Make Your Voice Count!

Today is National Voter Registration Day! The last day to register to vote in Massachusetts for the upcoming November election is October 17. You can register to vote online, by mail, or in-person. To find voter registration information for your home state please visit USA.gov’s “How to Vote” site.

Don’t miss out on the opportunity to make your voice count. If you know that you won’t be able to physically make it to the polls on November 6th you can request and cast your absentee ballot by mail. (Trust us, it’s easy!) Visit USA.gov to find absentee voting rules and deadlines for all states.

We’re so excited about National Voter Registration Day we made buttons! Stop at the Library Services Desk today to grab a “vote” button or two and show the world that you are a voter!

Banned Books Week: Celebrate Your Freedom to Read!

September 23 – 29 is Banned Books Week!

Held annually during the last week of September, Banned Books Week is a time for librarians, booksellers, teachers, publishers, journalists and readers to highlight the value of free and open access to information.

In 2017, the American Library Association’s Office for Intellectual Freedom (OIF) logged 354 challenges to library, school and university materials and services (including books, DVDs, magazines, programs, databases, games, exhibits and displays). In those 354 challenges, 416 books were targeted. The OIF estimates that 82-97% of challenges remain unreported.

Need an idea for a research paper? Just want the latest on a topic? Here is the display for you.

These books were chosen from the stacks by our reference librarians to showcase titles that may have escaped your notice when they were originally added to the shelves. You will recognize some of these titles and authors from bestseller lists, while others were chosen based on recommendations from professional and scholarly review sources or are on topics currently in the news.

Stop by the lobby to browse the display. We will continue to add new books that catch our eye as they arrive, so check back often!
