This display was inspired (cynically) by Earth Day. Earth Day (April 22) reminds us that we need to care for the planet. The items on display deal with themes of waste, contamination, toxicity, or pollution. These are all non-fiction DVDs and books selected on the sad subject of degrading the environment or trashing the earth, in some form or another.
Saving the environment is a persistent topic in the literature. Many of the voices in this display analyze specific garbage problems, propose solutions, or raise alarms about the unsustainable ways humans use planet. Collectively, humans continue to turn away from the planet’s garbage problem, but these materials inform us of ways to address it responsibly, soon.
The phrase “Don’t trash the earth” takes on new meaning when we see the proportion of damage being done to the Earth’s environment, as humans are obviously NOT caring for the planet well enough, and ought to strive to honor Earth Day, every day.

Now on view in the RSM Art Gallery is Other Worldly, an installation of large format paintings, triptychs, and diptychs by Nancy Hayes. All are invited to attend a reception for the artist in the gallery on Thursday, March 21, from 4:00-6:00 p.m.

Artist’s Statement
Painting permits direct access into my own personal laboratory where I develop forms and visual landscapes built from my imagination. I work with color, line, pattern and shape, arranging and rearranging until I am inspired to elaborate on a composition, going deeper into its texture, its biology.
As a writer does, I am building my own characters, their personalities and context in which they live. Just as a reader injects their own personal knowledge into a story, enriching the plot, my objective is to allow the viewer to explore their own visual narrative, enhancing the forms with their imagination.
It certainly doesn’t look or feel like spring right now, but it is time for spring break! Although classes are not in session, the library will remain open during the week with some modifications to our normal hours.
If you aren’t traveling next week you can stop in for a quiet place to relax, to borrow books and movies, or to pick up a museum pass (there are still plenty of passes available for next week – reserve them online now).

The Audies – the Oscars of the audiobook industry – are awarded annually by the Audio Publishers Association. Many of the 2019 award-winners and finalists are available at the library and the library staff have conveniently pulled together this content for you to checkout and enjoy over Spring Break and beyond.
On the display table in the library lobby, there is a collection of 2019 award-winners and finalists available on compact discs. The CD offerings will be highlighted until Thursday, March 7th, when they will be reintegrated with the Popular Audiobook collection on the main floor.
