Now on view in the RSM Art Gallery is The Bentley Student Experience, an exhibit of archival photographs and documents showcasing 100 years of student life at Bentley University.

Student Affairs at Bentley evolved as they did at colleges and universities across the country, though perhaps a bit more slowly as a result of Bentley’s status as an urban, “street-car school” that offered the basics to students. Once Bentley relocated to its spacious Waltham campus, the student experience steadily began to resemble that of a traditional residential college.

The Bentley Student Experience exhibit is not limited to student life narrowly defined as activities and clubs; but is intended to showcase all aspects of what has contributed to being a student at Bentley for the past century – in the classroom, in the residence halls, commuting by streetcar or on Route 128, playing a sport, serving the community, meeting someone with a drastically different background, and more.

Also available for online viewing is a companion online exhibit and a selection of videos from the Bentley archives dating back to the 1950s.

On Display: Live Your Best Life - Be the Best YOU Can Be!

Live your best life.  Sounds easy. Sounds complicated. It seems trendy at the moment to “live in the moment”, to live with authenticity, or to be present in our day-to-day lives. But why? Shouldn’t we always live like that? If we are always living for the next big thing; the promotion, the vacation, the relationship – we never truly enjoy the everyday small occurrences that can just as easily put a smile on our face or the faces of those we love.

This month’s display is called Live Your Best Life and we have curated a collection of books covering topics to reset your thinking in a positive way. Taking the time to develop new habits and routines, such as daily mediation, yoga, and gratitude can vastly improve our mindset over time. These habits, as well as decluttering items you no longer use or need, have been proven to relieve stress, reframe your thinking and can lead to a more positive outlook on life.

While many of these titles will be available on display in the library lobby, there are additional titles available on Overdrive in both audiobook and eBook format. There are also titles like Simplicity: An Uncomplicated Guide to Being Successful and Achieving Your Full Potential by Richard Gerver available through Books 24×7.

The most important thing to remember is don’t let others determine what your best life is. Find what habits work for you and what routines fit into your lifestyle. What works for one person might not work for someone else. So take some time to focus on Living Your Best Life this month; and start creating healthier habits for the days, months and years ahead.  

Database of the Month: Nexis Uni

Aggregating a wide range of content, all from credible sources in news, law, and industry, Nexis Uni is essential when researching global and regional newsworthy events, U.S. State and Federal law, and U.S. and foreign business.  Formerly Lexis Nexis Academic, Nexis Uni features a new interface and enhanced functionality designed with input from students and researchers enabling you to quickly and effectively discover, collect, and organize information.   

A good example is the highlighted text search, which makes the text of any document you find within Nexis Uni an entry point to related documents.  With your mouse, highlight text, then copy or add the text to take your search in another direction:

The option to save items to a personal Nexis Uni account, Drop Box, or Google Drive, allows you to gather and organize documents first so that you can easily find and read them later.

You may also register for a personal account which lets you customize your search experience and which lets you create alerts notifying you of content added to Nexis Uni which include search terms you specify:

For legal research, use “Get a Doc Assistance” located on the main search page.  This feature enables you to obtain documents by creating the appropriate legal citation according to content type and jurisdiction and to find cases by party names or by docket number.

Bentley Library Top 10 Most Popular Books, DVDs & Audiobooks of 2018/19

It’s time for the 10th annual Bentley Library Top 10! 

At the end of every academic year we tabulate the library’s most popular books, audiobooks, DVDs, and OverDrive downloadable ebooks and audiobooks based on the number of times they have been borrowed (excluding items placed on reserve for a class). These are our very own “Bentley Bestsellers” lists!

This year nonfiction scored big, claiming six spots in the Popular Reading ranking, a list typically dominated by fiction. Michelle Obama’s biography Becoming and Educated: A Memoir by Tara Westover were especially popular. On the fiction side, new releases by perennially popular authors Liane Moriarty, Jodi Picoult, John Grisham, and Louise Penny made appearances.

This is your chance to see what Bentley students, faculty and staff have been reading, watching, and listening to. Looking for something new to read, watch, or listen to? Our new acquisitions lists are a great place to start browsing!

We added 176 new books, DVDs, and audiobooks to the library’s collections in May. Go to the New Books & DVDs page to browse the new arrivals by subject or format. When you see something you want, click the “Request” button to place a hold on it.

Even if you aren’t near campus this summer you can still borrow books and audiobooks. Use the OverDrive app to download ebooks and digital audiobooks to your computer or mobile device. For help using OverDrive, view their Getting Started page or contact the Reference Desk for personal assistance.
