Workshop: How to Find the Full-text, and Other Library Mysteries Explained

A library workshop for students, faculty and staff:

Have you ever become frustrated trying to find something at the Bentley Library – perhaps an online article, newspaper, book or DVD?  Or, have you ever walked away empty-handed, disappointed that the library didn’t have the materials that you wanted? Then this workshop is for you!  Open to all Bentley students, faculty, and staff, this workshop will focus on library essentials, including finding materials here at the Bentley Library and utilizing Interlibrary Loan to retrieve items from other libraries.

This workshop is being offered on Thursday, October 22 @ 10:00am and Wednesday, October 28 @ 1:00pm in the library’s Research Instruction Center (lower level, room 11).  Please RSVP by sending an email to library@bentley.edu.

Note to attendees: If you have specific examples of items you’d like to find (articles, journals, etc.), please bring them with you to the workshop.

‘Tis the Season for Blood, Guts & Ghouls

Is that a chill in the air? Or is it a chill running down your spine from thoughts of Blood, Guts, and Ghouls?!?  The Bentley Library staff has put together a display of books and DVDs that are sure to thrill and spook you this Halloween season.

You can revisit classic gothic works Dracula and Frankenstein. Discover new bloodsucking tomes such as Stephenie Meyer’s Twilight series or the Charlaine Harris books that inspired the HBO TV series True Blood. Delve deep into the gothic/horror genre with various literary criticisms and histories on our fascination with what goes bump in the dark.

In the mood for a scary movie? Pick your poison! Our DVD selection ranges from Hitchcock flicks to Halloween. Frights abound with foreign films The Host, The Orphanage and many more.  We also have family favorites including Bedknobs and Broomsticks and It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.

October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month

President Obama has declared October 2009 to be National Information Literacy Awareness Month. His official proclamation states:

“An informed and educated citizenry is essential to the functioning of our modern democratic society, and I encourage educational and community institutions across the country to help Americans find and evaluate the information they seek, in all its forms.”

Columbus Day Weekend Holiday Hours

Columbus Day Weekend holiday hours will be in effect from Saturday, October 10,  2009, through Monday, October 12, 2009.  The library and cafe hours are:

Saturday, October 10:
Library is open 9:00am to 5:00pm
Cafe is open 12:00pm to 4:00pm

Sunday, October 11:
Library is open 1:00pm to 9:00pm
Cafe is open 3:00pm to 8:00pm

Monday, October 12:
Library is open 1:00pm to 2:00am
Cafe is open 4:00pm to 9:30pm

The library and cafe will resume regular hours on Tuesday, October 13, 2009. For more information about the hours please check our online hours calendar.

New Exhibit at the Art Gallery: Patti Singer

We are pleased to announce the opening of a new exhibit at the Caturano and Company Art Gallery, featuring the work of artist Patti Singer.   Open now until November 6, 2009.   All are invited to the opening reception for the artist on Wednesday, October 7, from 4:30pm-6:30pm.

Get Your Daily News (Online) at the Library

We’ve all recently heard the news that the Collegiate Readership Program has been suspended.  We know that many of you will probably opt to read the newspapers we used to receive –  The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and The Boston Globe – online via their web sites.  However, while these websites provide the daily news for free, access to their archives often costs money.  We’d like to remind you that there are many ways you can get complete access to these newspapers (plus thousands more) for FREE via the library’s databases. This includes their archives!  We recommend that you visit our News Resources page for complete details, but here are a few quick links to get you started.

Each of the above newspapers is available via the ProQuest NewsStand database. Clicking the newspaper name will allow you to browse the newspaper by date and/or to conduct a keyword search of the newspaper to retrieve articles by topic.

Faculty DVD Collection Now Open to All for Check-out

No more DVDs and videos kept under lock and key! We have reviewed our policy regarding the faculty DVD collection (DVDs and videos normally reserved for faculty check-out only), and in the interest of providing access to all we are allowing all DVDs and videos in the faculty collection to circulate to any member of the Bentley community for 3 days.  This change opens the door to an additional collection of 3,000+ DVDs and videos, including many documentaries and educational films that students will find useful for their courses.  Please note, all DVDs in the popular DVD collection will continue to circulate for 7 days.
