“Take a Paws” at the Library! Visit With Therapy Dogs on Reading Day.
The library is excited to host a Take a Paws session on Reading Day. Thanks to the Center for Health and Wellness, therapy dogs will be in the library’s art gallery on Tuesday, December 15th, from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Why have therapy dogs at the library? Studies have shown that interacting with animals can:
- improve our interpersonal interactions and mood
- reduce cortisol (the “stress hormone”), heart rate and blood pressure
- improve immune system functioning
- reduce anxiety
- enhance empathy
- improve learning
It’s posited that human-animal interaction activates the oxytocin system, leading to these positive effects.*
Don’t just take our word for it, come and see for yourself. Stop by the library Tuesday evening for your daily dose of dogs (and oxytocin)!

Remembering President Gregory H. Adamian
As many of you have recently heard, Bentley’s fourth President Gregory H. Adamian passed away on November 21, 2015 at the age of eighty nine. Dr. Adamian’s involvement with Bentley spanned six decades, including twenty-one impressive and influential years as our President. During those years, President Adamian helped to develop Bentley’s curriculum, expand our beloved campus, and increase the school’s endowment. He was consistently committed to providing a valuable education to Bentley students so that they could become capable, engaged leaders.
Our campus and our programs grew significantly under President Adamian’s leadership – for example, he was instrumental in the establishment of both the Graduate School and the Center for Business Ethics. Bentley students past and present are all grateful for his dedication! For those who would like to learn more about President Adamian’s life and work, or simply remember his contributions to our community, the Bentley Archives has prepared an online exhibit that can be viewed here. If you would like more information about President Adamian or about Bentley’s development during his tenure please contact Jaimie Fritz, Project Archivist, at archives@bentley.edu.

Together at Last: Batman and Maus!
Over the summer, we used our interdepartmental superpowers to create the Bentley Library’s first-ever Graphic Novel section. At long last, our graphic novels and comic book collections are all together! Batman and Maus used to be located on different floors of the library. No longer shall they be separated.*
Why do we have a graphic novel section? Well, that’s because comic books and graphic novels are awesome! They are often a gateway to literature. Some folks just aren’t that into reading books, but graphic novels can change that.
Bentley Alumna Jamie Carrillo (2012) had this to say when she heard about our new Graphic Novel section: “I am very jealous of this comic book/graphic novel section Bentley has now. I actually started reading them after a display in the library. I picked up Blankets and liked it; then read Black Hole and was hooked. I’ve never been much of a reader so graphic novels work well for me.”
In the past two years, three Bentley classes have used graphic novels as required reading. Our aim is to create a serendipitous browsing experience for students taking these classes, as well as the professors teaching them.
We hope that the Bentley community will benefit from this consolidation. If you’re checking out Alison Bechdel’s Fun Home (now an award-winning musical), maybe Vietnamerica: A Family’s Journey or Hellboy might strike your fancy.
If you’re confused by the terms “graphic novel” and “comic books” here’s a quick explanation: Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis is a graphic novel. It was published as one opus, not in single issues and then collected into one book. Graphic doesn’t mean violent and novel doesn’t necessarily mean fiction. The term “graphic novel” roughly means a story told through illustrations and words.
The Graphic Novel section also includes comic book collections of issues of Sandman, Amazing Spider-Man, and many more. Those are serialized collections of comic books. We also have manga like Ranma ½ in our Graphic Novel section, but that’s a whole other kit and caboodle. We went with Graphic Novel section because Graphic Novel, Comic Books, and Manga section was wicked long.

Our Graphic Novel section is located on the upper level of the library, at the end of the Oversize section. If you are browsing our catalog, you will see that the location for most of our graphic novels is Oversize. That doesn’t mean that the books are necessarily big, it’s just the location where they are shelved.
New and popular graphic novels, like the latest comic book collections of The Walking Dead, will continue to be shelved in the Popular Reading section. Online, you can browse a selection of these titles on Pinterest. We hope that you like this new section!
*This is a pilot program. It is possible that they will be separated again if it is not a success.
Online Archives Exhibit: Bentley Through the Years
As you prepare to take part in all of Bentley’s amazing Homecoming activities, we thought you might be interested in becoming more “In the Know” about Bentley’s history! For example, did you know that the original class consisted of just 30 students who used to meet not far from what is now the Hynes Convention Center? Or that tuition was $120? Do you know when Bentley became co-educational (for the first time), or what the original buildings on the Waltham campus were? Over nearly 100 years, we’ve evolved from the “Bentley School of Accounting and Finance” to “Bentley University” through a series of impressive developments that were the work of many dedicated people.
Our new exhibit, Bentley Through the Years, will introduce you to these changes as you look at photos and documents from every decade of Bentley’s history. You’ll learn how the school navigated through two World Wars, how Bentley students lived & worked, and how the campus developed, along with many other fun facts. You – students, faculty, staff, alumni, family & friends – are all a part of Bentley’s rich history! We hope this exhibit will connect you to your campus community and inspire you to keep making Bentley a place of innovation and collaborative spirit.

Please contact our Archivist, Jaimie Fritz, at archives@bentley.edu if you have questions about the exhibit, or if there is another part of Bentley history that you want to learn more about!
