Welcome back, Falcons! Ready for the fall semester? Stop by, call, chat, or email us if you have any questions. The library’s regular fall semester hours are:

Monday – Thursday
7:30 a.m. – 2:00 a.m.

Friday
7:30 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Saturday
10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Please note that our hours will change during the Labor Day holiday weekend, Fall Mini-Break, and Thanksgiving break.  You can view the library, cafe and Help Desk hours for the entire semester in our hours calendar.

Welcome to Bentley, new students! The staff of the Bentley Library are excited to help you have a great first year.

All new students – first years, exchange students, transfer students, and new grad students – are invited to the library’s open house event, Passport to the Bentley Library, on Friday, August 25th. Check in at the the arrivals desk in the library’s lobby any time between 1:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m.

After receiving your library passport and map you will embark on a self-guided tour. As you explore, library staff will show you how to….

Art Gallery Exhibit: “The Birds, The Bees, Curiosities . . . and Books!”

The Birds, The Bees, Curiosities . . . and Books!, an installation by artist Annie Silverman, is now on view in the RSM Art Gallery. Annie Silverman is a relief printmaker and book artist who has been creating experimental work with print installations, printed dimensional objects and books for over 20 years. In 2007 she formed Abrazos Press, a small teaching and professional studio with Sandra Butler and Nina Wishnok in Somerville, MA.

All are invited to attend an opening reception for the artist on Wednesday, August 30, from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m.

Artist’s Statement

Annie Silverman specializes in both wood block and mixed media printmaking, and has been a printmaker for over 20 years.

The wood that she carves to create the matrices for her prints is specially prepared plywood from Japan called SHINA, which is easy to carve and keeps a lot of detail.

She is often asked “how long does it take to carve that?” and she always says, “As long as it takes”. Carving and listening to audio books are very complementary studio activities.

Does art imitate life, or does life imitate art? Much of Annie’s inspiration comes from her life experiences. She is an urban beekeeper, a beginning accordion player, and a gardener, with strong interests in natural history and botanical illustrations. She also is intrigued with antique circus posters from the 1800’s. There is often an air of humorous oddness in her work which she finds entertaining and hopes her audience does as well.

Database of the Month: Swank Digital Campus (Streaming Films)

This month we feature another of our streaming film collections as our Database of the Month. Swank Digital Campus includes over 100 feature films and documentaries from major studios spanning a number of genres. Films included in this database include cinema classics and contemporary films.

This curated collection has popular titles such as Spotlight, Pulp Fiction, An Inconvenient Truth, and Fargo.  Recently released titles such as Moonlight, La La Land, and Fences are also available in Swank.

Browse films by genre on the homepage by scrolling through movie covers or search for titles directly in the search box. Click the film cover to begin viewing.

Swank Video Viewer

Each page for a film includes the film viewer (which can be expanded into full screen mode), release year, MPAA film rating, run time, brief synopsis, director, and actors.

Language audio and subtitle options vary by title. These can be found in the video viewer under the gear symbol [ Swank Gear Symbol ].

Direct links to films are available to share in course sites – the “Copy Direct Link” option will give you just the link where “Copy LMS Link” will give you the HTML code for the link to embed in a course site.

Access

Swank Digital Campus films can be streamed in your browser both on campus and off.

The library’s hours change for the period of time after summer session ends and before the start of the fall semester – Saturday, August 12 through Sunday, August 27. During this time, the library is closed nights and weekends. The library will resume regular hours with the start of fall semester classes on Monday, August 28.

We’ve pulled together a selection of nonfiction titles especially for you. This display covers a broad variety of topics including: psychology, business, history, sports and science. This display also features some biographies and true adventure accounts.

Can’t get to the Bentley Library this summer? All these titles are also available through Overdrive, just download the app, check out the title and start listening today.

Taking vacation this month? Don’t forget to stop at the library before you go! We have plenty of great summer reading books—hardcover, ebooks and audiobooks—to relax with!

To browse our newest arrivals, go to the New Books & DVDs page to browse by subject or format. When you see something you want, click the “Request” button to place a hold on it.

Interested in downloading or streaming ebooks and digital audiobooks? You can use the OverDrive app to download books to your computer or mobile device, or read/listen to books online in your browser via the library’s OverDrive site.  For help using OverDrive, view their Getting Started page or visit the Reference Desk for personal assistance.

Database of the Month: Kanopy (Streaming Films)

With an ever-expanding catalog of over 50,000 films, Kanopy delivers diverse content in a variety of genres, from award-winning documentaries, training films, and theatrical releases on a wide range of topics and subject areas that span all academic disciplines. With media from producers such as Criterion Collection, PBS, Media Education Foundation, and Great Courses, this resource is ideal for both faculty and student research needs.

Access:

Streaming films from Kanopy can be viewed on or off campus through Firefox, Chrome, Safari, and IE and are accessed via authentication of your Bentley credentials and allows for simultaneous users of a particular title.

Search and Browse:

If there is a particular film you are looking for, you may search in the following ways:

From the library’s catalog:

Select Books/Video/Audio, enter your search criteria, then click Search.

Then click on the Kanopy link to view the film.

From Kanopy:

Enter your search criteria in the search box at the top of Kanopy’s main page and click the Search icon.

Then select the desired title from the listing of results.

The film should now appear ready to stream, complete with features described below.
