On Display: Words Have Power – Read a Banned Book!

According to the American Library Association website, “A [book] challenge is an attempt to remove or restrict materials, based upon the objections of a person or group. A banning is the removal of those materials. Challenges do not simply involve a person expressing a point of view; rather, they are an attempt to remove material from the curriculum or library, thereby restricting the access of others. As such, they are a threat to freedom of speech and choice.”

American Library Association

In 2016, 323 book challenges were recorded in the United States by the American Library Association. (It is worth noting that many challenges go unreported.) The majority of challenges occurred against materials found in public and school libraries, and were most commonly brought by parents and public library users. The most common reasons for book challenges are: sexually explicit subject matter, offensive language, and religious viewpoint. ALA does not track international challenges, but history records many instances in which books have been censored and/or suppressed based on political viewpoint and other reasons deemed offensive to the state or nation.

In conjunction with Banned Books Week 2017 and through the month of October/beginning of November, we’ve provided a selection of fiction titles that have been reported as challenged and/or banned by public libraries, school libraries, and countries. Also included are some nonfiction titles on censorship topics. Stop by to take a look at the books on display or view them online (and place holds on anything you’d like to check out). Books on display each contain a banned-books-themed bookmark, which readers are welcome to keep. We’ve also made some buttons which are free for the taking.

If you use our OverDrive Downloadable Books , a list of banned and challenged books appears when you log into that collection.

Exercise your freedom to seek and express ideas- read a banned book!

Artist’s Statement:

This body of work represents four years of an investigation of still life painting and sculpture. You will not find a defined table top, beautifully placed romantic objects, or even a defined light source. Instead, you will experience the relationships between objects, vertical compositions, controlled space and design. You will discover, as I did, a more complex love for two-dimensional design and composition.

I look long and hard for relationships between objects, vertical movements, and value balance. These are the harmonious relationships I see in an everyday still life situation. In this work, the paintings and sculptures come first, with their own vocabulary and style. Second, comes a slight glimpse of formal still life concerns. Spirit and a poetic thought communicate to the viewer before the actual look and feel of a traditional still life. This emphasis on two-dimensional concerns and vertical relationships takes the viewer to new experiences in still life viewing. This creates an abstracted view of the still life, putting the emphasis on the design and sensibilities of the artist.

These two-dimensional design concerns actually allow me to express a more authentic still life, one created with emotion and feeling that can be set aside from the traditional literal approach to this classical subject matter.

S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage: New Name, Content, and Interface!

Introducing the new and improved NetAdvantage database!

The Standard and Poor’s NetAdvantage database has a new name, more content, and a refreshed interface. Now called S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage, the database presents with a dashboard view that may be familiar to regular users of the full version of the Capital IQ database offered at the Trading Room. But, please don’t confuse S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage with the full version of Capital IQ – they are two different resources!

S&P Capital IQ NetAdvantage retains the same key S&P resources our users have come to rely on (e.g. industry surveys and stock reports), but brings new research content and tools.

Key features retained from the old NetAdvantage database:

  • Industry Surveys for more than 40 industries are still available, and we now have expanded access to international surveys for selected industries. The surveys continue to be published 2x per year and their format remains the same, but you will notice that they are now called CFRA Industry Surveys. Archived surveys are available back to 1999 unless a survey is a new title. There are two ways to retrieve an industry survey:
    • click the [Industry Surveys] button in the top menu, then choose from the list of industries
    • search for a company to retrieve the company profile, then click [Industry Surveys] in the left navigation bar to retrieve the relevant industry survey
  • Stock Reports also continue to be available, but are now found in the Equity Research section of a company profile. When viewing a company profile, click [Equity Research] in the left navigation bar, then select the CFRA Equity Research Report.

Key features added to the new NetAdvantage database:

  • expanded company universe of private and public companies (over 3 million)
  • new investment research from third party research providers (when viewing a company profile select “Investment Research”; also available under the “Investment Research” tab)
  • new industry data sets with benchmarks and key ratios (available under the “Markets” tab)
  • new drill-downs to sub-industry data, including key stats and ratios and financial operating metrics (available under the “Markets” tab > “refine industries”)
  • financial data items with new embedded audit trails to see how an item is derived
  • new chart builder tool
  • any screen can now be downloaded to Excel, Word, or as a PDF

Research example: Tesla

  • Start by using the search box to retrieve a company profile for Tesla. Note the navigation links on the left side of the screen to additional research, including equity research, investment research, industry surveys, financials, peer analysis, and news.

The “Compare” feature enables you to compare additional entities against your primary entity. Watch this chart builder video tutorial for more information about using chart builder.
