Looking Back with Nostalgia
Join us for a trip down memory lane, courtesy of the Bentley Archives!
Bentley University Reunion Weekend
Saturday, June 2  |  9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Welcome back to campus, Bentley alumni, family, and friends!

We invite you to stop in to the library to view two Bentley Archives exhibits that celebrate the 50th anniversary of Bentley’s arrival in Waltham and talk with the University’s archivist, Jaimie Fritz. The exhibits—“Waltham Campus” and “Bentley Milestones”—will be on display in study rooms 102 and 103. Perhaps you can help Jaimie identify documents and photographs! If you’d like to bring your own Bentley memorabilia, we will scan or photograph your items for the Archives. You’ll also have the opportunity to make your own souvenir button.

While you’re here, take a stroll around the library to view our spaces and collections. (If you graduated before 2006 the building will look quite different!) We’re happy to answer any questions you have. Enjoy your visit and have a great Reunion Weekend!

Reading Day Relief! Coffee Break, DIY Buttons & Therapy Dogs

Coffee, tea, and snacks will be available in the lobby from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. (or until supplies last). Bring your own reusable water bottle to refill at one of our three water bottle filling stations.

Take a break from studying to make-your-own buttons using the library’s button makers. We’ll provide pre-made designs, magazines, and coloring books for you to use, or you can put markers to paper and create your own design. This activity is sure to get your creative juices flowing!

Therapy Dogs

Our furry friends Kodiak and Echo are returning to the library to spend some quality time with you! Studies show that interacting with animals can improve our interpersonal interactions and mood, reduce cortisol, lower heart rate and blood pressure, reduce anxiety, enhance empathy, and improve learning. Come and see for yourself. Drop in to the art gallery to unwind with these two giant, lovable Bernese Mountain Dogs.

“The Year We Thought About Love” – Film Screening and Q&A

The Bentley Library, Equity Center, Residential Center, Multicultural Center, and Student Programs & Engagement are excited to present a screening of the documentary film The Year We Thought About Love on Monday, March 12, at 7:00 p.m. in the Wilder Pavilion. The screening will be followed by Q&A with filmmaker Ellen Brodsky and members of the LGBTQ youth theater group, True Colors.

The Year We Thought About Love documents the journey of an amazing group of young people from Boston as they develop, write, and perform a unique play based on their own experiences. The camera follows them in and out of rehearsals, homes, and classrooms to capture their exploration of love in all its forms: romantic, familial, and religious. The lives of several troupe members are highlighted to bring to the forefront the challenges and joys of LGBTQ adolescents. More about the film and its subjects can be found at their website.

RSM Art Gallery Exhibit: Debra Kennedy | “Color – Light – Passion”

By day Debra Kennedy is the Director of Executive Education at Bentley University; at night and on weekends she paints! Opening on January 20th in the RSM Art Gallery is an installation of Debra’s paintings she has titled Color – Light – Passion.  We are very pleased to host a reception to celebrate the opening of the exhibit on Wednesday, January 24, 2018 from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. We hope you can join us!

Artist’s Statement:

Debra Kennedy is a representational artist and has been a painter most of her adult life. Her paintings document places she spends time: in Boston, on Cape Cod, and in southern Florida. For many years Debra worked solely in watercolor and loved the loose fluidity of the paint and the challenge of the experience. For the past several years she has been working in oils, enjoying the texture and the richness of color. By day Debra is the Director of Executive Education at Bentley University. At night and on weekends she paints! For Debra, “creative pursuits have a way of stretching all aspects of thinking and seeing challenges. Painting is play – it is good for the soul.”

Are you curious about the “world” of resources that the Library offers?

Visit the Library lobby all week to see a pop-up display of books and movies from across the globe! We’ll also provide search tips on how to discover new favorite titles by searching for diverse writers and filmmakers.

Do you already have a favorite book or movie from a diverse voice or place that’s not in our collection? Let us know by placing a title into our suggestion box, and we’ll consider adding it. If you can’t make it to the library, you can submit suggestions via Twitter or Instagram using the hashtag #BentleyLibraryWishlist, post your suggestions on Facebook, or comment here.

We’ll also have a giant world map on display. While you’re browsing the books and movies, take a moment to pinpoint the location where you or your ancestors come from, and check out the diversity of our Bentley community.

GeoGuessr Party at the Library! Culture Fest 2017 Event

See the world, eat snacks from across the globe, and win prizes, all from the comfort of the Bentley Library!

Come play GeoGuessr – a fun online game that utilizes Google Earth to drop you in a random spot on the globe! Move around on the map to try to determine your location, and earn points based on how close your guesses are. Will you end up in the fjords of Norway, or trekking through the Amazon?  Get a top score and select a beautiful travel book as a prize! Drop-in for one round or stay for the entire time. All are eligible to win!

Artist’s Statement:

This body of work represents four years of an investigation of still life painting and sculpture. You will not find a defined table top, beautifully placed romantic objects, or even a defined light source. Instead, you will experience the relationships between objects, vertical compositions, controlled space and design. You will discover, as I did, a more complex love for two-dimensional design and composition.

I look long and hard for relationships between objects, vertical movements, and value balance. These are the harmonious relationships I see in an everyday still life situation. In this work, the paintings and sculptures come first, with their own vocabulary and style. Second, comes a slight glimpse of formal still life concerns. Spirit and a poetic thought communicate to the viewer before the actual look and feel of a traditional still life. This emphasis on two-dimensional concerns and vertical relationships takes the viewer to new experiences in still life viewing. This creates an abstracted view of the still life, putting the emphasis on the design and sensibilities of the artist.

These two-dimensional design concerns actually allow me to express a more authentic still life, one created with emotion and feeling that can be set aside from the traditional literal approach to this classical subject matter.
