Top 10 Most Popular Books, DVDs & Audiobooks

Move over New York Times bestseller list, it’s time for the annual Bentley Library Top 10! Each May we query our database to find out which books, audiobooks and DVDs have circulated the most times during the academic year (excluding any items placed on reserve for a class).  There are many ties in the rankings this year, so each of the lists includes more than ten titles, giving you even more to choose from.

This year’s most popular fiction included top10-2012-2013blockbusters by J. K. Rowling, Gillian Flynn and E. L. James. In nonfiction, Susan Cain’s Quiet: The Power of Introverts in A World That Can’t Stop Talking and Cheryl Strayed’s Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail appeared on the both the books and audiobooks lists.  Remarkably, Malcolm Gladwell’s The Outliers landed in the Top 10 for a fourth consecutive year!

Books that were released as movies fared well, including Life of Pi, The Perks of Being a Wallflower, The Hunger Games and Cloud Atlas. The Top 10 DVDs list is an interesting mix of TV series and movies, from Downton Abbey to The Game of Thrones and The Avengers to The Iron Lady.

Compiling the Top 10 lists is one of our favorite annual activities; we hope you enjoy them as much as we do!  Browse the BENTLEY LIBRARY TOP 10 lists for academic year 2012-2013 in the categories of Popular Reading, Stacks (regular book collection), Audiobooks, Popular DVDs, OverDrive Downloadable eBooks and OverDrive Downloadable Audiobooks:

Bentley Library Staff Picks

One of the benefits of working in a library is being surrounded by a staggering number of books and films, and while this does not mean that library staff get to spend our workdays reading and watching movies, most of us are avid consumers of all types of media in our personal lives.  Many of us participate in book clubs, our office conversations often revolve around what we’re reading and watching, and we will enthusiastically make book and movie recommendations to anyone who asks.

It’s in this spirit that we have been adding staff picks boards to Pinterest.  Right now you’ll find picks made by Liz, Donna and Amy, but more boards are on their way.  Here’s a sample of what you’ll find:

open-quote

“If you’ve managed to escape hearing about David Sedaris or reading any of his books, start with this one. Do yourself a favor – the essays in this book are tear-inducingly funny.” / Liz, on Me Talk Pretty One Day by David Sedaris

“Wonderful novel about fate and friendship and another book that helped re-ignite my love for reading for enjoyment.” / Donna, on A Prayer for Owen Meany by John Irving

“The story of three friends whose lives are all in some way wrecked by the same woman – wonderful writing.” / Liz, on The Robber Bride by Margaret Atwood

On Display: Best Books of 2012

It just wouldn’t feel like a new year here at the Bentley Library if we didn’t put together our annual Best Books display.  We’ve spent the past few months poring over our favorite reviewers’ year-end lists (The New York Times, NPR, Amazon and The Wall Street Journal, to name a few) to bring you our largest best books display ever – over 200 titles in both print and audiobook format.

Best Books of 2012As you might assume, the display features insanely popular books that have received numerous accolades, but it also includes many titles that may have escaped your notice.  No stone was left unturned and no genre or subject has been ignored.  You’ll find literary fiction, thrillers, YA (young adult) literature and graphic novels alongside biographies, historical tomes and books examining business, culture, politics and the economy.

Please stop by to browse or take a look at the display on Pinterest.  You may also want to take a look at our Overdrive downloadable book collection, as some of these books are sure to be found in eBook format to enjoy on your mobile devices.

We’re certain that this display contains something for everyone, but if you don’t find anything intriguing at first glance we encourage you to keep checking back.  We’ll be adding to the display frequently as new acquisitions arrive and currently checked-out books are returned.

Happy New Year and happy reading!
