Database of the Month: Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory

Ulrich

Whether you want to find out if a source is authoritative or want to find places to publish a piece of writing or an article, Ulrichsweb Global Serials Directory is a great place to start. Ulrichsweb includes detailed information on more than 300,000 serials of all types: academic & scholarly journals, e-journals, peer- reviewed titles, popular magazines, newspapers, newsletters and more. Each Ulrich’s record provides data points such as: ISSN, publisher, ordering details, subscription price, language, subject, abstracting & indexing coverage, full-text database coverage, tables of contents and reviews written by librarians.

Just type in a specific title (Advances in Accounting) or ISBN number (0882-6110) to bring up the relevant record.

Ulrichcompletrecord

Please note that the Content Type: “Academic / Scholarly”  just means that the title is published or sponsored by a college, university or a traditional academic publisher. The key to authoritative sources is to look for the Refereed Symbol (See below image)Ulrichcodes

Another Key Feature to note when looking at the authority of a source is to see whether or not a source is included in Journal Citation Reports (JCR). In an Ulrichsweb record, the JCR information will be noted under the “Additional Title Details”. Please see earlier JCR blog post about Impact Factor for more information about JCR.

Advanced Search allows you to search for groups of titles by the critieria you want in over 950 subject groupings.

A results list can be narrowed down using the facets searching on the left or sorting the different columns by clicking on the headings

Artist Statement:

Engaging in creativity has been essential to me for as long as I can remember.  As a young child I spent countless hours sewing clothes for my stuffed animals from scraps of cloth and then drawing pictures of them sporting their new apparel.  I also spent a lot of time drawing my sisters, our dogs and the flowers and trees in our yard as well as making construction paper collages of virtually everything, but especially the trees.  My mother’s brother and sister were both artists who were never happier than when they had paintbrushes in their hands and I seem to have inherited that feeling from them.  At the age of 8, however, I fell in love with music and that took me down a different creative road until I was a freshman in college and decided to use my music scholarship to pursue an education in Accounting.

Throughout my early adult life, I was always a volunteer for various creative arts organizations while focusing mainly on my career.  Then, in 2000, I attended a special Van Gogh exhibit at the Museum of Fine Arts on my very first weekend as a Boston-area resident. I was completely awe-struck by the exhibit and overwhelmed by the fact that the MFA was my ‘hometown museum’.  With this amazing resource available, I vowed to rededicate myself to the creative process and started with classes at the venerable School of the Museum of Fine Arts that summer and have been painting and drawing regularly ever since.

Thanks to Bentley’s agreement to let me phase out of my current academic position, I have recently had the opportunity to study intensively for months at a time in NY at the world famous Art Students League with some of the greatest living painters and teachers including Burt Silverman for whom I have had the honor of serving as class monitor and also with Nelson Shanks, Ray Kinstler and most recently Dan Thompson, who is without a doubt the most passionate teacher I have ever known.  Painting brings me great joy and I am so happy to have this amazing gift back in my life. I am never happier than when I’m in the sun dappled woods trying to capture the amazing beauty before me.  And even when I’m not painting, I’m looking at the world as an artist again and it feels really good.

Life Stories

On Display: Life Stories

Life StoriesOne question we get quite a lot at the reference desk is “Where is your biography section?”. This is not an easy question to answer. The library has thousands of biographies, autobiographies and memoirs in our collection, but these titles are classified under various topics/disciplines which puts them in different call number areas of the collection.

Currently on display in the Library lobby is a collection of biographies and autobiographies celebrating the wide variety of people and places published in this genre. Included are winners of the Pulitzer Award, National Book Critics Award, James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award. We have also included some brand new 2012 titles and some staff picks.

Please stop by and browse, or, check out the display on Pinterest!

Database of the Month: American FactFinder

American FactFinder is a web tool provided by the United States Census Bureau that offers access to some of the Bureau’s largest data sets, including information from the Decennial Census, American Community Survey, Economic Census and Population Estimates Program. American FactFinder helps you find population, economic, housing, industry, and business data about the United States, Puerto Rico and the Island Areas. Many of these statistics are broken down at the national, state, county and place levels.

On January 20, 2012, American FactFinder went through a major upgrade and now has a new look and features.

Searching American FactFinder

You can use the Quick Start box located in the middle of the screen to pull up tables or data files that meet your search criteria. You can search by topic or table or for a specific state, county or place.  You may use the links on the left side of the page (under Search Using the Options Below) to browse topics, geographies, race and ethnic groups, or industry codes associated with the many different statistical data sets contained in the site.

The data in American FactFinder comes from several censuses and surveys. To learn more about the individual surveys click on the symbol next to each table on the search results page.
