Database of the Month: Nexis Uni

Aggregating a wide range of content, all from credible sources in news, law, and industry, Nexis Uni is essential when researching global and regional newsworthy events, U.S. State and Federal law, and U.S. and foreign business.  Formerly Lexis Nexis Academic, Nexis Uni features a new interface and enhanced functionality designed with input from students and researchers enabling you to quickly and effectively discover, collect, and organize information.

A good example is the highlighted text search, which makes the text of any document you find within Nexis Uni an entry point to related documents.  With your mouse, highlight text, then copy or add the text to take your search in another direction:

The option to save items to a personal Nexis Uni account, Drop Box, or Google Drive, allows you to gather and organize documents first so that you can easily find and read them later.

You may also register for a personal account which lets you customize your search experience and which lets you create alerts notifying you of content added to Nexis Uni which include search terms you specify:

For legal research, use “Get a Doc Assistance” located on the main search page.  This feature enables you to obtain documents by creating the appropriate legal citation according to content type and jurisdiction and to find cases by party names or by docket number.

Lexis also offers three custom search widgets, representing the most common search types: news and current events, state and federal cases and court decisions, and company information.

Search the News

Extensive local, national and international news sources can be accessed by using the Search the News box. Search by keyword, source type, or publication title to view articles from more than 3,000 newspapers, uploaded on the day of publication. Lexis also contains radio and television news transcripts, political press briefings, blogs and websites, wire feeds, and magazines. Non-English language sources include documents in Arabic, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Portuguese, and Spanish.

Look Up a Legal Case

Users can access federal laws and regulations, and the statutes, administrative codes, and constitutions for every state. The database also includes legal research materials such as newspapers, magazines and newsletters, and law review articles from over 800 journals.

Database of the Month: LexisNexis Academic

The LexisNexis Academic database has a new and improved user interface.   LexisNexis Academic provides regional, national and international full-text content from over 10,000 news, legal and business sources.  The new Easy Search interface is divided into six subject areas so users can efficiently search  LexisNexis Academic content.   The LexisNexis Power Search still provides users with the option to use the search types “terms and connectors” or “natural language”.

The Search the News section allows users to search local, regional, national and international news sources from 1980 to the present.  Users can limit by source type, such as newspapers, magazine and even blogs or they can limit by a publication’s name.

Look up a Legal  Case provides access to U.S. and state cases by citation (163 U.S. 537), parties (Furman v. Georgia), or topic (equal opportunity). Users can click on the Cases link to help refine a search for a case and theLandmark Cases link to find a list of important U.S. cases.

Under Get Company Info users will find access to information on over 43,000,000 companies.  Basic company information can be found by search for a company name or ticker symbol.   More complete company information can be found by clicking on the Company Dossier and Company Profile links.

The Research Countries section allows users to find political and economic information about a specific country.  Country information can be searched by country name and limited by source.

With the Research People section users can research public figures. Enter at least a last name in the input boxes provided.  To find general information about the public figure, select “Biographies” from the source drop-down box. To see recent news stories that include a person select “Recent News Stories.”

Finally, the Combined Search feature is useful for searching a particular topic over different types of content.  Searches can be limited by date (with the system default set for “previous 2 years”) while content type searched can be expanded to include news, legal cases, SEC filings, company profiles and law reviews.
