October is Massachusetts Information Literacy Month

National Information Literacy Month 2011 BadgeGovernor Deval Patrick has proclaimed October 2011 to be Massachusetts Information Literacy Month. Never heard of it? The official proclamation says that information literacy:

“provides the tools and skills to find, evaluate and use credible information from all sources in our constantly evolving world”

and that:

“Individuals who are comfortable working with the informational resources available in the digital world are able to seek highly skilled jobs and compete at high levels in the global economy.”

Information literacy is crucial to seeking and understanding information, whether you’re writing a research paper, making health-related decisions, or trying to find unbiased news coverage.

Want to see what the Bentley Library does to promote information literacy? Visit our Information Literacy and Instruction Research Guide to learn about library instruction and initiatives related to finding, evaluating, and using information of all kinds.

Curious about what this has to do with being a member of the business community or of a business university? Come to the library’s October 26 event “Who Wrote This and Why Should I Care? Evaluating and Understanding Information in a Business Context.” A panel of experts will discuss the challenges of evaluating information, and being information literate, in an ever-changing information landscape. More information can be found in this blog post.

For even more information on information literacy, click on the badge in this post to be taken to the website of the National Forum on Information Literacy.

Who Wrote This and Why Should I Care? Evaluating and Understanding Information in a Business Context

In the classroom and in the business world alike, the ability to evaluate information for context, credibility, and accuracy is valuable for success, whether that means getting a good grade on a research paper or making a pivotal financial decision that will affect your company’s future. In order to successfully analyze information sources, users must know what to look for, and how to look at it. What goes into the writing of a news article, a business report, or a press release, and how do these documents differ from one another? How do reporters, analysts, and other writers evaluate the sources they use to prepare a piece of information that you will use? How do businesses evaluate and use information, and what are the costs and benefits to businesses of accurate information evaluation?

A panel of experts from journalism, education, and business will convene at Bentley University on Wednesday, October 26, to discuss these questions and many others related to the production, evaluation, and use of information sources. Sponsored by the Bentley Library, the panel will take on a topic that is always timely but is of particular concern as electronic resources become increasingly ubiquitous.

Please join us in LaCava 305AB at 6:00 pm for light refreshments, with the discussion getting underway at 6:30 pm.

Celebrate Read Comics In Public Day

Mark your calendars! Sunday, August 28 is Read Comics in Public Day! Last year’s event was celebrated all over the world, on five continents. The Bentley Library is here to help you honor this occasion with our graphic novel collection! Highlights include 2011 Eisner Award winners American Vampire (by Scott Snyder and Stephen King), Wilson (by Daniel Clowes), and Jacques Tardi’s It Was the War of the Trenches. We also have classic graphic novels such as Neil Gaiman’s Sandman series, Alan Moore’s Watchmen and Art Spiegelman’s Maus.

Read Comics in Public Day

This nerd holiday was created in 2010 as an “attempt to legitimize the popular oft culturally marginalized world of sequential art.”  To participate in this holy geek holiday, all you have to do is read a comic book or graphic novel in public on August 28. This date also happens to be the birthday of American comic book artist and writer, Jack Kirby.

Make sure you share what you read on August 28! The Twitter hashtag for the event is #readcomicsinpublic. You can also “like” Read Comics in Public Day on Facebook.

Click on the book covers to see if they are available to checkout from the library.
