On Display: New & Notable Nonfiction

Our new display places the spotlight on some of the most notable and interesting nonfiction received at the library within the last six months.

Bentley Library reference librarians have hand-picked these books from each of their subject areas to bring attention to titles you may have missed when they were first added to the shelves.  You’ll find a wide variety of highly recommended academic titles, as well as bestselling nonfiction that will appeal to all readers.

Stop by and browse our selections.  We will continue to add new books that catch our eye as they arrive, so check back often!

On Display: And the (Book) Award Goes To

Currently on display in the library lobby is a twenty year retrospective look at the award winning books in both fiction and non-fiction. While there are many prestigious prizes awarded to books each year, the titles in this collection represent the winners of the Man Booker Prize, National Book Award, PEN/Faulkner Award and the Pulitzer Prize, and include some titles that have since been made into films.

You can see which award (or in some instances, awards as in the case of The Haunted Land, Embracing Defeat, The Hours, Independence Day, and Shipping News) was given to each title here on our Pinterest board or by visiting our display (just check out the bookmark placed inside the book).

The March

On Display: Let the Games Begin!

The London 2012 Olympic Games (Games of the XXX Olympiad) are taking place July 27 through August 12, 2012.  Billions of spectators around the world will witness over 10,500 athletes representing 205 nations compete in 26 sports. Dream TeamWe invite you to explore the history, cities, athletes, business, culture and memorable moments of the Olympic Games through our current display of books and DVDs.

Several new books have been published about the Olympics recently (typical of an Olympic year), including books about the 1992 Dream Team, the incredible story of the London 1908 marathon, and the tragedy at the Munich 1972 games.  We’ve also dug deep into the stacks to highlight some classic titles, like David Halberstam’s chronicle of the 1984 Olympic trials for rowing, The Amateurs, and William Oscar Johnson, Jr.’s All That Glitters is Not Gold.  Rounding out the display are a few of our favorite Olympics movies.

We hope you’ll take some time to stop by and browse the display, or view the books and DVDs on our Olympic Games Pinterest board.

Life Stories

On Display: Life Stories

Life StoriesOne question we get quite a lot at the reference desk is “Where is your biography section?”. This is not an easy question to answer. The library has thousands of biographies, autobiographies and memoirs in our collection, but these titles are classified under various topics/disciplines which puts them in different call number areas of the collection.

Currently on display in the Library lobby is a collection of biographies and autobiographies celebrating the wide variety of people and places published in this genre. Included are winners of the Pulitzer Award, National Book Critics Award, James Tait Black Memorial Prize and the PEN/Jacqueline Bograd Weld Award. We have also included some brand new 2012 titles and some staff picks.

On Display: Best Books of 2011

Best Books of 2011Happy New Year and welcome back! We spent some time over winter break closely examining year-end “best books” lists from a variety of sources (Amazon.com, The New York Times, The Economist and Kirkus Reviews, just to name a few) to bring you our annual Best Books display.

Featuring over 150 fiction and nonfiction titles in both print and audiobook formats, you’ll find prominent bestsellers that were highly publicized, wildly popular and credited on multiple best-of lists. However, this display also features many books that you may not have heard about; books that were critically acclaimed yet didn’t receive as much attention from the mainstream. Curious? Well, then come take a look!

We’re certain that this display contains something for everyone, but if you don’t see anything of interest at first glance, keep checking back.  We are adding to the display daily as new acquisitions arrive and currently checked-out books are returned.

On Display: Based on a Book

How many times have you said to yourself…

“I need to read that book before the movie comes out!”
– “That was a great movie, I really should read the book.”
– “They’re going to turn that book into a movie? Really?”

Thus, the inspiration for our latest book and film display: Based on a Book.

Not unexpectedly, the Based on a Book display includes well-known classics and best-selling works of fiction and nonfiction that have been adapted for the big screen (in some cases more than once), but there are also some book/movie pairings that you might find surprising.  For example, did you know that the sci-fi classic Blade Runner was based on a novel called Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? by Philip K. Dick, that Rosalind Wiseman’s sociological look at the world of teenage girls – Queen Bees and Wannabes – was transformed by Tina Fey into the comedy Mean Girls, or that the award-winning movie The Social Network was based on Ben Mezrich’s book, The Accidental Billionaires?

Come take a look at the numerous book and movie choices, we’re sure you’ll find something that you’ve been meaning to read or see.
