Get Your Daily News (Online) at the Library

We’ve all recently heard the news that the Collegiate Readership Program has been suspended.  We know that many of you will probably opt to read the newspapers we used to receive –  The Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, USA Today and The Boston Globe – online via their web sites.  However, while these websites provide the daily news for free, access to their archives often costs money.  We’d like to remind you that there are many ways you can get complete access to these newspapers (plus thousands more) for FREE via the library’s databases. This includes their archives!  We recommend that you visit our News Resources page for complete details, but here are a few quick links to get you started.

Each of the above newspapers is available via the ProQuest NewsStand database. Clicking the newspaper name will allow you to browse the newspaper by date and/or to conduct a keyword search of the newspaper to retrieve articles by topic.

Faculty DVD Collection Now Open to All for Check-out

No more DVDs and videos kept under lock and key! We have reviewed our policy regarding the faculty DVD collection (DVDs and videos normally reserved for faculty check-out only), and in the interest of providing access to all we are allowing all DVDs and videos in the faculty collection to circulate to any member of the Bentley community for 3 days.  This change opens the door to an additional collection of 3,000+ DVDs and videos, including many documentaries and educational films that students will find useful for their courses.  Please note, all DVDs in the popular DVD collection will continue to circulate for 7 days.

To find a DVD or video by title, subject, or keyword, simply go to http://libcat.bentley.edu and click on the “DVDs/Videos” link.

Upcoming Library Workshops for Faculty and Ph.D. Students

The Bentley Library is offering the following workshops for faculty and Ph.D. students this month:

MLA/APA Citation Styles Workshop

Date & Time: Wednesday, September 23 @ 12:45pm
Description: Within the last year, new editions of both the MLA Handbook and the APA Publication Manual have been released. This workshop will cover changes to MLA and APA citation styles, and how those changes are reflected in RefWorks, EndNote, and other library sources. Further resources and suggestions for how to incorporate the changes into student citation practices will be offered.

EndNote X2

Dates & Times: Thursday, September 17 @ 12:30pm to 1:30pm – OR – Monday, September 21 @ 2:10pm to 3:10pm
Description: EndNote is bibliographic citation software that allows users to manage and store bibliographic citations, PDFs and research notes. EndNote provides citation style and manuscript formatting for hundreds of top publications, as well as, the APA, MLA, Chicago and many other associations. EndNote provides over 700 import filters for direct import of citations from online databases, including EBCSOHost and ProQuest. This Endnote workshops will focus on getting started EndNote X2, including manual and direct import of citations, selecting manuscript styles, and creating bibliographies. EndNote X2 is available via the VLAB.

All library workshops are held in the Library’s Research Instruction Center, located on the lower level of the library in room 11. Seating is limited – please RSVP to library@bentley.edu and indicate which session you are registering for.

Getting geared up for the Emmy Awards ceremony being held on Sunday, September 20? The Bentley Library has a large selection of Emmy-nominated TV series on DVD!

Get your fill of “V juice” (that’s vampire juice, for the uninitiated) with season one of True Blood. Find out if the survivors of the colonial fleet finally locate Earth in the final season of Battlestar Galactica. Discover Joss Whedon’s Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog, starring Emmy awards host, Neil Patrick Harris. You can even take a walk down memory lane and revisit past Emmy winners including All in the Family, M*A*S*H, and The Cosby Show.

Excited about Family Guy’s Emmy nomination for best comedy series? We’ve got you covered with DVDs of the series and the book, Family Guy and Philosophy! Want to geek out even more? Check out volume one and two of the Heroes graphic novels from our Popular Reading section. We also have several script books in our collection including episodes of ER, Frasier, and Seinfeld.

We hope you enjoy this display, which highlights many of our summer acquisitions – Weeds, How I Met Your Mother, The Tudors, X-Files, Entourage, Mad Men, The Muppet Show and more!

Caturano and Company Art Gallery ~ Bentley University Library ~ 5:00pm – 7:00pm

You’re invited to the opening reception for the first exhibit of the season at the Caturano and Company Art Gallery – tonight from 5:00pm to 7:00pm.  Local filmmaker and artist, Jonathan Sahula, exhibits three large scale photo collages.   Please take a moment to stop by the Art Gallery to meet the artist and view his artwork.

Attention Early Birds…Library Opens at 7:30am

You asked, and we have responded! Due to popular demand we have extended our morning hours – now opening at 7:30am, Monday through Friday. So, whether you are an energetic early-bird or a less-than-enthusiastic member of an early morning class, the library doors will be open for you to use the printers, borrow library materials, and study.   Please note, the cafe opens at 8:00am. H1N1 Information & Resources

Flu season is fast approaching.   Bentley University’s Center for Health & Wellness website is designated as the official site for  information on H1N1 influenza.  The Center for Health & Wellness site will provide the most up-to-date information about H1N1, as well as lists of Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and other selected resources.

If you are interested in conducting further research about H1N1 – or influenza in general – please visit the Bentley Library’s H1N1 library research guide.  This research guide highlights librarian-recommended books, databases, and websites useful for researching H1N1 and related topics.
